What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people heal from trauma and distressing life experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR works directly with the way your brain stores traumatic memories, helping to reprocess them so they no longer trigger the same emotional distress.

This powerful approach has been extensively researched and proven effective for treating PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other trauma-related conditions. It’s endorsed by the World Health Organization, the American Psychiatric Association, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

How EMDR Works

EMDR therapy follows a structured eight-phase approach that helps your brain reprocess traumatic memories in a safe, controlled environment.
01

History & Treatment Planning

We identify target memories and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

02

Preparation

You'll learn coping strategies and stress-reduction techniques to use during and between sessions.

03

Reprocessing

Using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or tones), we help your brain reprocess traumatic memories.

04

Integration

We reinforce positive beliefs and ensure the healing is complete and lasting.

What to Expect in Sessions

EMDR sessions typically last 60-90 minutes. During reprocessing phases, you’ll focus on a traumatic memory while following bilateral stimulation (usually guided eye movements). You remain in control throughout the process and can stop at any time.

Most people experience significant improvement in 6-12 sessions, though this varies based on individual circumstances. Some people notice changes immediately, while others see gradual improvement over time.

EMDR therapy can be helpful for a wide range of experiences and conditions, including:

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Childhood trauma and abuse

Anxiety and panic disorders
